Kendall, Montana, February 24, 1903. 3. A HOME FOR MINERS. THE PROSPECTOR'S SOLILOQUY. Why Should Not the Old Prospector Ha•e a Retreat. The Western Mining World says it has been thinking a great deal of late about the establishment. of a home for the aged and disabled prospector and miner, and the more the question is studied the more apparent becomes the justice of it. It would, if carried ton success, be worth more to civilization than thousands of the wordy orations delivered every Sun- day from the pulpits of our churches all over the land, on the subject of charity, which in their practical effects, from a charitable point of view, are only put- monic, in so far as the preacher is con- cerned. In the business rush of these commercial days, we Americans seem to have lost eight of what is due to the men who ventured, and by reason of their daring and self-sacrifice, accompliehed so much, not only in the solid building up of all our industrial life, hut in the greater and higher advancementofAtnee- ieno civilization. Their activities and discoveries have given this nation no false direction. Their work has been rapid and effective. They have - in the broadest sense, been the Useful citizen, injuring none and helping all. • There is not a profession or business calling known to man, that is not the better because of the trail blazer, the pioneer, the prospector and the miner. Their cause is a national one. III the performance of I heir duty it was these men who laid the substantial foondation upon which this nation has built all its durable success. And every man who de- sires to be an appreciative and useful citizen should help in molding public sentiment in favor Of such a movement. And the government should foster the enterprise And he who fails to take his full part in the work is derelict in his duty. UNION MEN SLURRED: A Lewistown Paper Attempts to Read Kendall People a Lesson. The Judith Basin News, a socialistic Paper printed in Lewistown. %% bids is struggling hard to make itself the ''of- ficial organ\ of yorkingmen ill this county, last week tocrk a side step in or- der, evidently, to slur the workingmen of this camp. The News quotes some- one as saying that non-union tobacco, for instance, sells readily while union brands are a drug on the market. Then it goes on to do a little lecturing, as fol- lows: \Yon union men are to blame -le these non-union goods in your town, for being sold to your immediate citizens, and it is your duty to see that they are relegated to the scab -scavenger wagon ;\ and some more to the same effect. Thus doeFethe socialistic News not only cast discredit on the union principles of the miners and other union men of this town, but it advertises taat this is essen- tially a \scab\ camp. The truth is, all union made goods sell well here, and there is a large demand for them. The union men here do not need instructions front the outside as to their duty, and they resent insinuations that they do not live up to the principles they profess. ASSUMING SHAPE. It Looks as Though Kendall wduld Soo\ Have the Time of Its Life. Affairs in this district are edging around to a point where they are as- suming a mighty interesting phase. In a very short time it is quite likely a mining deal will take place which, by reason of the enormous amount of money involved, will startle the finan- cial world. What will the effect of such a deal have on Kendall? Why, it will simply revolutionize affairs. It will mean that Kendall will speedily become one of the largest mining camps in the state ! ! Keep a watchful eye on Kendall. To sink, or nott. to sink, that is the question; Whether 'tie better for the prospector to soil The highly metalliferous cropping for it song, Or, using muscle, dig her down— A nd thus, by perseverance, strike it. To sink, to work, no more, arid by that sinking Strike lead of gold or silver, or the finest Copper glance that luck is heir to— 'Tie a consummation devoutly to be wished— To sink, to blast—to blast—to blast! per- chance to bust ; Aye, there's the rub, for at the depth of ten feet What base may come when we have shoveled off the uncertain top Must give us prom. There's the respite that makes calamity of a prospect hole. For who can tell what pinch may come Below the argentifeaous stuff, cotnpo- nent parts of lead, The decomposed conglomerate eruption of nature, All broken up, perchance, and then the insolence Of luckier Hoke's, when we, the prus- pectors, Might. be better off by simply welting. What would we not do but that the dread of something Yet unseen, the undiscovered pay streak, perhaps not there, Puzzles the will and rather makes us raze the tnountuents We have than open the ground we know not of. Thins (bath prospecting make cowards of is all, And 01'1.4 the prospects of a big bonanza are eicklied o'er By some dark and cussed doubt, so that the prospector, With thia intent; his littered turns aside And lose perhaps a million. —Captain Jack Crawford. WEATHER TO ORDER. A Winter Noted for Its Mildness and In- vigorating Conditions. So far as weather is concerned, no part of the United States has been better fa- vored this winter than Fergus county. At no time has the thermometer indi- cated intense cold, and for weeks at a time the atmosphere has been delight- fully clear and pleasant. While zero weather and blizzard conditions have prevailed ncrth, south and east of us, here outdoor life has been most agree- able. It has been a particularly favora- ble winter for stock. Oa where you may throughout the county and no distress among stock can be noticed. Upon many ranches cattle have been out all winter and have been -fed little or no bay. Altogether the residents of Fergus coun- ty have cause to rejoice over their good fortune in the way of weather. A fight is on for the millions left by Charley Fair. So far old Uncle Jimmy's fortune has proved a bonanza for the lawyers. Snow felt inSan Francisco — one day last week, the first in ten years. Geo. R.
