The first issue of The Melstone Graphic came out on Oct 6, 1911. The paper continued until the publisher/editor Robert A. Lockridge left to start a new paper, The Rosebud Courier in March of 1913. It is unclear why Lockridge left Melstone, especially since no copies from 1913 are known to exist. However, a report in the Roundup Record on Feb 14, 1913, says that Lockridge swore out a complaint against the Deputy Sheriff for assault. The Record further states that “the officers here are of the opinion that the trouble at Melstone is more of the nature of fractional strife which no doubt was fomented by recent exposures by Editor Lockridge in his paper.” Whatever the problem was, Lockridge left town and Deputy Sheriff Al Smith remained at his post in Melstone.
