The car previ- ously had been driven from Massachusetts to California, and had a mileage of 20,000 miles registered on the speedometer at the start of the return trip. The average speed for the 3,481 miles was- 26 miles an hour -gas mileage, 22 1 :2 miles per gallon, oil, 289 miles to the quart. The drivers were not out for a speed record, but they pushed along with the idea of getting through as fast as was comfortable. ' Cow Eats Bankroll Johnny Snuing of Salisbury, N. When the .American public observed that the automobile was taking families away from their homes into the country that fact was recorded. When it was noticed that the Iradio kept people at home dur- ing the evenings that fact was 'recorded too. But now we are told that 'the radio is resulting in the disin- tegration of the home. This story is told: A married man with a fam- ily was seen walking down town in a certain small city. \Where are you going?\ he was asked. \To a movie,\ he replied. \What's up?\ he was asked. \Wife is playing with the ra- dio and wants to hear a lecture. I want to listen to music. We both can't have what we want so we compromised like so many married people and she has her lectures and I left the house.\ All of which will cause it smile but no one is going to take this very seriously. Of course, radio has its limi- tations. But life itself is a game of give and take and that which entertains or instructs and pleases the largest number must be given attention first. The family that quarrels over what to hear on the radio will quarrel over anything. Alice Foote MacDougall Gives Her Recipe For Hot Waffles F IFTEEN years ago Alice Foote MacDougall, a young widow with children and no means of support, did not have suf- ficient money to start busineae on even the smallest scale. With bor- rowed capital she organized a nall coffee business. To -day A.lioe Foote MacDougall's coffees are known all over America and in many foreign countries, and in addition she has three beautifully appointed New York tea rooms. Much of the popularity of the .Alice Foote MacDougall tea rooms is due to the famous coffee and to the delicious waffles served. There- fore, it is quite a \scoop\ to be a.ble to publish hirs. AfacDougall's Owe recipe for waffles. Hot U'afties eneeful Flour 2 tablespoonsful melted Crisco 2,‘ teaspoonful Baking 13oda 1 teaspoonful Salt 1 tablespoonful Sugar 2 cupsful Sour MIX Eggs Mix and gift dry ingredients, add milk gradually, yolks of eggs akeli beaten. melted Crisco and whites of eggs beaten to stiff froth; cook on hot waffle iron greased with Crisco. Serve with maple syrup, or honey and butter. Waffles may be served for break- fast, luncheon, supper or high tea. An electric waffle iron such as Mrs. MacDougall, uses is the most convenient. The iron should be well heated on one side, turned, heated on other side, and thorOughly greased with Crisco be- fore iron is filled. In filling put tablespoonful of mixture in each compartment near the center of Iron, cover and mixture will spread to till iron. If sufficiently heated, it should be turned almost as soon as tilled and covered. In using nr•ve iron, special care must be taken tis greasing or waffles will stick. e Piete-Our f fader /nay &Nam fere a sera 110 page cook book by Add** scsko tie Na41 Honsehold Soweto*, 363 P41/8 V • it City.
