All flowers should be picked early in the morning before the sun hits them and put immedi- ately into water, preferably warm, to absorb the most pos- sible moisture before travel and exhibition in hot weather. Flowers should be cut with a sharp kinfe and those with small tubes such as asters, annual chrysanthemums, carnations and sweet peas should be cut under water. Woody stems should be split or pounded from one to two inches above the cut, to help them absorb water. Flowers having such stems are chrysan- themum, stocks and foliage stems. Juicy stems, such as those of dahlias, should be seared in a flame or dipped in boiling water to seal in juices and cause them to absorb water more easily. Next plunge into warm water so the water will travel faster into the stems and then let stand in cool place. All foliage below water level should be removed to prevent decay, fouling the water and thereby shortening the life of the arrangement. Some flowers brought to the fair in past years have not been washed, but flowers should be washed gently to remove the soil from the leaves and blos- soms for better showmanship. They should be placed on a clean piece of paper, rather than on the possibly dirty floor of the car, .Some flowers should be in containers during moving, such as zinnias, to prevent breaking the stems and anyone traveling long distances may want to bring an extra flower or two along in case of breakage. The num- ber of stems should be counted carefully before placing in a container at the fair or they may be eliminated during judging for too few or too many. In choosing a rose, the foliage, condition of blossom, disease, thickness of stems, amount of floral opening (which should be three-quarters for judging) and the color are some of the quali- ties a judge looks for in competi- tion. The varieties, if known, should be written on the tag for the benefit of those viewers in- terested in new types. Gladiolus should have at least 20 buds of which eight or nine may be open, but not less than five, and one floret can be taken off the bottom. The stalk should be groomed by removing the side shoot. All florets should be forward to see a skeleton up the back, but only 40 per cent of the length of the total plant should be cut, otherwise the bulb will not mature. The num- ber of florets in some of the new varieties will be consider- ably less than 20. Chet Leesons Announce Birth By Mrs. S. J. And life was lived at quite a clip in the mining camps. For- tunes were made fast and cities were built fast. The miners' rule that preceded formal law in the west was geared to the times. Claim jumping (or mining another man's claim) was allowed if the owner failed to work his claim for three days running. Of course, exceptions were made in the event of illness. Viola- tions of this self -established code were intolerable to the sense of fair play that still remains a solid charac- teristic of the west and met with swift and stern 'miners' justice.\ This same philosophy of respect for the rights of others survives to this day in the west. The tight of each individual to a free choice whether it be to \work his claim\ or to choose a glass of beer for refreshment is a proud tradition of Montana history which we still enjoy today. Today in Montana the United States Brewers Foundation works constantly throughout the beer business to assure the sale of beer and ale under pleasant, orderly conditions. Beer belongs In the free west. Enjoy it.
