I looked 1.35 into this and believe that it should be given a great deal of 28.50 2 75 consideration. If you take the Noxon school 1.89 240.63 census from your paper, which 4 35 is everyone under 21 years of 3.00 age, it amounts to 254 individ- 295.51 uals and • • it, ,no'the cost 644.64 of $698,00 'you get $2,748.00 18.60 each, but it's worse thin that. If 22.40 you take the actual puPils in the school, which is about 160, and 19.40 58.80 divide it out you get $4362.00 160 per student. When the federal .70 government participates in 70.64 school construction, costs are 7.91 not permitted to exceed $1400.00 2 2 per pupil. They should be in a 3.4 position to know about what we should spend. Also the?* is the item of interest of $553.,000.00 109 0\ plus the cost of heat and main- -.2 tenance on a project of this 4.38 1.75 5.30 1.50 2.80 25.75 2.81 640.00 1888.00 212.00 25.30 214.26 (386.41) 18 (17 .63) 1.37) (584.90) $16,834.38 BRIDGE FUND A1992 H. If you allow for expansion of double the number of stud- ents now attending school, the cost is still out of reason. I'm not against a new school or something being done about this. I plan on living here the rest of my life and my children will probably go there, but let's be reasonable. Some say why should we worry as Washington Water Power Co., Northern Paci- fic Railway, Northern Lights and Mountain States Telephone will pay 90 per cent. At the pre- sent time we have a life in- surance company moving out of Helena because of taxes. I know they can't move Noxon dam, but if we'd pull off a stunt like this you can forget. about any chance that we might, have of getting a pulp mill, alifininum plant or any other industry to move into this area. There will be no need to build the school with room for expansion. Also things aren't back to nor- mal after the period of construc- tion and if we could go along for another year or two to see which way the wind is blowing, we will probably have a better idea about the whole thing. For the time being, let's give educa- tional emphasis to teachers, cur- riculum and useful facilities to build better futnre citizens, and vote against the bond issue. Sincerely yours, Rod Auclair Trout Creek Health for All 4 * By Red Schoenchenft Star second baseman with the Milwaukee Braves and nation- al honorary Christmas seal chair- man I'm a fine one to be writing a health column, seeing that $ was flat on my back only a few months ago. This time last year, in fact, I was in the hospital with tuberculosis. And I knew I'd be spending Christmas there. If you've never been in a hos- pital, you have no idea what a completely different world it is. All of a sudden, somebody else decides things for you. Makes you fel like a kid. Then when Christmas comes around, you feel even worse about being in the hopsital. Of course, they try to make things cheerful and Christmasy - decorations up and nurses singing carols and a special Christmas dinner. But nothing can make up for not being with your family. This year I'm spending Christ- mas with my family and I'm sure happy about it. But I can't help thinking of all the other people, still ill with tuberculosis, whose Christmas won't be a happy one. You'll be helping them, just as you helped me, by contribut- ing generously for Christmas seals. Christmas seal dollars help to find the people who have active TB . . . back up some of the research into better methods of treatment . . help get people back to normal living when they're well again . . teach people how to keep healthy. Please send in your Christmas seal contribution today. Sleeps at Jail, Works During Day The Sanders county sheriff's office is taking advantage of a new law passed by the last leg- islature which permits men serv- ing jail sentences to work at their private jobs in the day- time, but spend their nights and weekends in jail. Keith Poirier, sentenced by Justice E. H. Davis to six months on a bad check charge, is work- ing as a logger in the daytime and then returns to jail each night. The system is expected to save the county considerable money and also help prisoners maintain an income for their families. For Poirier, the new system went into effect Monday. Rockwell Home Pfc. George Rockwell arrived home a week ago Monday from Okinawa after serving an 18 - month tour of duty in the Pacific islands with the Marine Corps. He will spend a 30 -day leave with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Vern Sloan, his brother, Bob, and his sister, Mrs. All Hoff and family before reporting to a California Marine base for fur- ther duty. Help Fight TB Use Christmas Seals EXPLOITATION OF STREAM HABITAT DESTROYING FISHING, BIOLOGIST SAYS A plea for sportsmen to exert pressure to prevent the unwar- ranted destruction of fishing habitat in Montana's streams and lakes was issued to mem- bers of the Thompson Falls Lions club by Boyd Opheim. of Kalispell, district fisheries man- ager. Thursday night. Opheim said construction of new roads and highways and some soil conservation practices are raising havoc with fishing streams throughout The state. Construction of new roads and straightening of Old' highways adjacent to streams is fast de- stroying fishing. These , practices are particularly evident in the central part of the state; :Good fishing is going fast in the Gal- latin, Madison and JefferSon rivers because of these prac- Road Surveyed, Bridge Built In T. C. District TROUT CREEK - Surveying of a forest access road up Rock creek and construction of a bridge on Whitepine creek have been completed in preparation for two large timber sales plan- ned after Jan. 1 in the Trout Creek ranger district, John Brinkerhoff, district ranger, re- ported Tuesday. , Two survey crews from the Region I Forest Service office in Missoula Friday completed surveying of nine miles of road up Rock creek near Noxon. Sche- duled for sale this winter is ap- proximately nine million feet of timber in the Rock creek area. A bridge crew, also from Mis- soula, has completed construc- tion of the 31 -foot treated tim- ber bridge across Whitepine creek about four miles above the Walter Watson ranch. The bridge is a part of a plan for a road system into the Whitepine creek area for timber sales in that area. The first offering of 9i/2 mil- lion feet in the area last month received no bids. Brinkerhoff said the sale will be re -advertis- ed in the spring. Another survey crew now is working on a new telephone line to the new Trout Creek ranger station. The line will extend from the new Highway 10A bridge at Trout Creek. Brinker- hoff said construction of the telephone line will be started this winter to aid the employ- ment situation in the Trout Creek area. GIVE TO FIGHT TB use Christmas Seals tices,\ Opheim declared. Using colored slides to illus- trate his lecture, Opheim plead- ed, \Let's head this off, fel- lows.\ He said harvesting of fish in the famed Madison has resulted in an annual expenditure by an- glers of $11,000 per stream mile. He felt that such a factor in the state's economic life de- served far more attention than it is receiving currently from highway planners, soil conserva- tion engineers and some , in- dividual land owners. He pointed out that the re- moval of brush along the banks of a stream cuts the fish popula- tion one third; straightening of a stream cuts the fish life anoth- er third and when a stream is both widened and straightened that all fish die or leave the area. Opheim said Montana has a right to be proud of its fine fishing still to be found in many waters. It is the only state with native grayling left. He said the Montana Fish and Game Dept. is attempting to maintain a small grayling population in high altitude lakes, but that they are fast disappearing from streams to which they were once native. He said the golden trout, some of which were planted in high altitude lakes in the Thom- pson Falls area earlier this fall, are another example of work by the department to provide ,fish - Shooters Win 18 Steaks . Thirty-nine members and guests were served a turkey din- ner at 6:30 after which the mas- ter talked on Grange work for booster night. WANT ADS get result.; fast! ing for futtire generations of Montanans. The Noxon Rapids lake is the only project of its type where the sponsoring agency has done anything to help find the answ- ers to better fishing. He was re- ferring to the current six -year study being carried out by J. J. Gaffney, fish biologist, in con- junction with the rehabilitation program in the impoundment. The Washington Water Power is bearing the entire cost of the rehabilitation project and is sharing in the cost with the state of the six -year study. Opheim said that modern, ap- proved logging practices actual- ly help fishing habitat -that the big destroyer of habitat is road building, which changes, straigh- tens and scours stream beds, re- moving all marine life and feed. He said residents of Montana should be proud of the fine hatchery system -that it is one of the finest in the West. \The present drive for more and more hatchery fish to be planted in streams and lakes with less and less habitat is not the answer. Hatchery planted fish now provide only 18 per cent of the annual total of fish harvested by anglers. The answ- er lies in preventing the destruc- tion and the exploitation of good fishing habitat.\ He referred to test sections of Prickly Bear creek between Helena and Great Falls which provided a pound of trout per linear foot of stream. The build- ing of a new road along one test section of the stream removed all brush from the stream banks, straightened and widened the stream and thereby sterilized the water for fish. Pointing out that the problem was not as acute in Sanders county as in other sections of the state, he urged sportsmen to maintain a .diligent check to see that stream habitat is not de- stroyed here. He pointed out that economics is an important factor in the problem. Roads are easier and cheaper to build adjacent to stream beds, particularly in nar- row canyons, However, a buffer zone of brush and trees and care in avoiding disturbance of stream beds by big road building machines could solve the prob- lem if sportsmen would exercise their influence . Guests at the meeting were John N. Williams, Jimme Wil- son, Roy McKenzie and Tom Car- ter of Plains.
