We have never felt it necessary to do so for football officials. Hardly any spectator knows what is going on at a football game; almost every spectator is sure he knows more than the official at a bas- ketball game. We have had a lot of fun with our editorials, and have tried to point out in a humorous way that it is more enjoyable to be a good sport, as well as leaving a better impression of the community. We take high school sports quite seriously, but not as seri- ously as some of our friends. We will write a little more seriously than usual. This deci- sion tomes after reading the lat- est bulletin of the Montana High School Association, the govern- ing body for interscholastic athletics in the Treasurer State. Now being proposed is a new article in the association bylaws that would deal more severely with unsportsmanlike conduct by players, coaches and crowds. It seems evident that some, at least, of the association officials regard this as a growing prob- lem. In the case of fans pnysically molesting an official, the offend- ing (host) school would be given a choice. It could either take action against the offenders or be suspended from the MHSA. Other unsportsmanlike conduct would bring penalties ranging from a warning to a probationary period for the school. It is a commentary on the oc- casional behavior of Montana basketball fans that association members should consider such regulations necessary. In the heat of battle on the court, it is sometimes hard to remember that this is just a ball game, that the future of the community or the world does not hinge on it. Combative instincts are aroused that seem more in keeping with the scalping that went on at Custer's Last Stand. Let's learn not to take our sports so serious- ly, lest controlling groups be forced to more serious steps to C!) control us.
