The first issue of the Poplar Shopper was published on May 7, 1964 by Dana and Norma Jean McGowan in Scobey Montana. This was due to sharing printing equipment with the Spartan Shopper run by Jim and Marie Shennum. In September, they moved their printing operation to Poplar. Initially, the Poplar Shopper was generally available, in 1972, it moved to a subscription model. With an exclusive focus on local news, the Shopper covered everything from school events to local government for 37 years. After Norma died in 1977, Dana continued to publish. In 2001, he placed the paper up for sale, but with no takers, the Shopper shut down completely. The last issue (July 12, 2001) served as a tribune to Dana, Poplar and the Shopper.
