The girls were presented certificates and pins in recognition of their selection as Good Citizens from their respective high schools. DAR sponsors the Good Citizen program annually. Another guest, not included in the photo, was Rhonda Smith of Poplar. Good Citizens not present for the event were Borbara Mckeon of Malta and Toni Marchwick of Wolf Point. During o short business meeting, chapter members signed cards for Mrs . Leo Coleman and Mrs. Robinson, who is the mother of Mrs. Leo Borthelmess of Malta, chapter officer. it was noted that C. O Christiansen had been selected by the DAR as the out standing naturalized citizen. Mrs. J. Wiley reported that she had sent a certificate of honor to the family of Staff Sgt. Robert Brown who recently lost his life in Vietnam. Mrs. Alex Torkelson was co-hostess for the special event. Hansen, Pop- lar Chamber of Commerce President announced that the 6th Annual Farmers- Ranchers - Businessmens _ Appreciation Stag night will be held on Tuesday, Janvary 27th 1970 at 6:30 p.m. at the American Le- gion Hall. The invitations will be sent out in the near future . _ > The first baby of the year born at the Poplar Community Hospital was Deanna Lynn Jones. She arrived January Sth, 1970 at 2:00 a.m. Her parents are Mr. & Mrs. Earl Jones, Jr: »~ LAR, MONTANA BB CONFERENCE PLAY STARTED The Poplar Indians opened their 1969-70 conference schedule last week and were defeated by Circle 60-68 and Baker 52-63. The Indians have shown improve- ment in the past two weeks in all phases of the game. Poplar stayed close in both games until the final minutes of play. In the Circle game the Wild- cats led at quarter stops |8-20,. 31-36, 47-48, and 60-68. Roscoe Schmidt led Circle with 14 points. Denver Atkinson led the Indians with 22 followed by Robbie Buckles with 14, Ben Zimm- erman 8, Dave Sage 7, John Stormy 3, Rockie Cummins 2, Warren Brown 2, and Bob Linthicum 2. Poplar scored only seven points in the second quarter against Baker and from then on trailed the Spartans. With five minutes left in the final quarter the Indians battled back to within six points but could not over- come the lead. The Spar- tans won the gome at the free shooting 19 for 35 compared to Poplar's 8 for Il. Town- send led Baker with I9 points. Twenty three of these in the second half. Following in scoring for Poplar were: Zimmerman 8, Cummins 6, Bob Atkin- son 5, Buckles 2, and Brown |. The Indians travel to Nashuo on Friday, January 9, and play host to Medicine Lake on Saturday, January 10. DISTRICT JUDGE TO FILE District Judge M. James Sorte, Judge of the Fifteen- th Judicial District, today announced his intention to file and campaign to retain his office in the 1970 ele- ction. Judge Sorte was appointed to fill a vacancy on August Ist, 1969. The appointment is effective until the next general election - November of 1970,. when Sorte will run. JANUARY 8.1970] PCA SESSION IN WOLF POINT 7% Carl Nieberg, president of the Federal Intermediate Credit Bank of Spokane, will be the guest ‘speaker at the 36th Annual meeting of the Northeast Montana Production Credit Associa- tion to be held in Wolf Point on Saturday . The meeting will be at the Elks Club and will open with a dinner at noon. During the past year, the Association has loaned over $5 million to farmers and ranchers in northeast Mont- . ane. Present directors are John F. Lee, Scobey; Robert J. Balder, Wolf Point; Dan W. Anderson, Opheim; Vincent E. Bergh, Redstone, and Kenneth A. Sage, Pop- lar. The terms of Balder and Bergh expire. Officers are Lee, president; Balder, vice president; Clair Lekvold, acting sec- retary-treasurer, and Don- ald D. Witmus, assistant secretory-treasurer . INVITATIONAL SPEECH TOURNEY The Poplar High School Speech Deportment will host the third annual Poplar Invitational Intradistrict Speech Tournament Sat. Jan. 10th. Registrations will begin at 7:30 a.m. at the high school and the final rounds of competition are scheduled to be held at 3:00 p.m. with the awards presented at 4:00 p.m. Approximately 10-12 schools have indicated an interest in the meet. Pre-registra- tion has been received from Baker, Culbertson, Dawson County High School, Carter County High School, Fairview Medicine Lake, Plentywood, Sidney, and Wolf Point. Competition will be held in the events of debate, extemporaneous speaking, impromptu, original oratory, oral interp, expository speaking, and memorized public address. Tournament director Dwight Moose has indicated that there will be approximately 150 stu- dents participating in the tournament .
