AND HAULING SERVICE RS ee ENE owt a TEACHER INTERNS For a period of time | have been trying to find time to write some explanatory mat- erial conceming the teacher interns we have had in our elementary system since late in August. By way of explanation, | will endeavor to define student intern and then. move alogg from there . The student intern is a ju- nior or Senior education major. In our case, the intern is from Eastern Mont- ana College at Billings. The intern will spend a per- ° iod of approximately 6 1/2 months in our school system learning about the positive and negative features of rural education and rural communities. The first quar- ter will be spent in obser- vation of the supervising teacher, and working with small groups of young peo- ple. The interns will also work in the capacity of a teacher aide assisting the teacher in other classroom housekeeping -duties. The second quarter, the intern will take over the more active teaching procedures under the supervision of the supervising teacher. The internship program differs from the regular student teacher program in the amount of time spent in a particular school, and in the remuneration involved. Before | begin to describe how this program came into being, allow me the priv- ilege of saying that this tional endeavors in Poplar than any other to my know- ledge. The school is profit- ing, and so are the young interns whether they move on from Popler to some other location, or whetherthey decide to return to Popler for the 1970-71 school term. Now that | have castsome bouquets around, | should try to explain how this program come into being. During a meeting ot East- ern Montana College in the summer of 1969, the thou- ght was advanced that schools in Eastern Montana, not just Poplar, have very little chance to recruit the youngbeginning teacher to their school systems. it was felt that Billings, Lourel, and other schools in the immediate area of the col- lege would always receive the first consideration be- cause of the proximity to the college. To offset this advantage, three schools, Poplar, Wolf Point, and St. Labre's agreed to provide financial support to an in- femship program which would bring some of these young teachers to our school system to work, and become acquainted with the positive ond negative features of rural education and rural communities. The program was planned by the Teacher Education De- partment of Eastern Mont - ana College and could ne- ver have gotten off the ground without their plon- ning and assistance . The second step in the process of establishing the program was to find out what students, Juniors or Seniors, would be interest- ed-jn coming out to the outlying districts. We knew that there would have to be incentives over and _ above the credits toward graduation. Ordinarily, the prospective teacher practice teaches for one quarter and receives nothing but credits toward graduation. Of course, this is enough if you can live at the college or at home. The incentives offered to the prospective interns were $100.00 per . month in wages and board and room.
