WEEK Four Poplar High School Seniors were selected by their academic achievement to attend Montana State Shannon Moilanen, on the basis of her score in the home- making knowledge and atti- JEFFERSON-JACKSON DINNER University's Annual High School Week, April 23-25. Those selected included Gwyn McAnally, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Brian McAnally; Shannon Moilanen, daughter of Mrs. Betty Moilanen; Mitch Marnes, son of Mr. & Mrs. Lawrence Werner; and Tom Danielsen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jim Danielsen. The High School Week program is designed to assist visiting High School Delegates make decisions in keeping with special interests, aptitudes, and abilities that will be bene- ficial in planning for the future. In addition , over $6,000 in scholarships will be awarded to High School Week participants who have demonstrated exceptional academic abilities on a battery of tests administered by the university. Jack Copps, high school principal, will accompany the students to Bozeman. Mr. Copps will be attending a meeting of the Montana Association of Secondary School Principals. TRAILER FIRE CLAIMS LIFE An early morning fire in a small trailer home claimed the life of Sarah Eder, wife of John Eder, Poplar, Mont. Death was caused by asphy- xiation and burns. A complete obituary will appeor in next weeks paper. Over two hundred people turned out Saturday night to hear Governor Forrest H. Anderson address a Wolf Point Jefferson-Jackson din- ner at the Elks Audnitorium. The Governor emphasized the need for streamlining State Government and asked for a referendum that will be on the ballot to limit the number of state agencies to twenty. He said, “It is impossible for any Chief Executive to eff- iciently adminster a state government with well over one hundred departments, boards and agencies.” Gov- ernor Anderson also reviewed Montana's economic prob- lems with emphasis on de- clining agricultural income and limited job opportun- ities that drive our young educated people elsewhere to seek employment. He urged rural Montanans to support programs for develop- ment that will bring more people on our payrolls. \Unless we can do this the tax burden on rural Mont- ana will simply become more than they can bear,\ said the Governor. George Stensland, seeking Democratic nomination for County Commissioner, ann- ounced his resignation as Chairman of the Roosevelt County Central Committee . Ruth Nyquist. of Bainville, has again assumed the lead- ership of the Democratic party in this county. She previously has served the party in many responsibili- ties including that of county Chairman. of Massachusetts will speak to the students during the conference on April 18th at 9:00-10:00 A.M. In addition to receiving a specially designed silver charm from General Mills, sponsor of the annual home- making education program, Shannon is now eligible for one of 102 college scholar- ships totaling $110,000. From school winners in the state, a State Homemaker of Tomorrow and runner-up will be selected within the next few weeks. The state winner will be awarded o $1, 500 scholarship and the runner-up ao $500 educational grant. In addition, the school of the state Homemoker of Tomorrow will receive a complete set of Encyclopedia Britannica from Encyclopedia Britannica, Inc. This spring, the 51 Home- makers of Tomorrow repre- senting every state and the District of Columbia, each accompanied by a school advisor, will join for an expense-paid educational tour of Washington, D. C., and Colonial Williamsburg, Va. Climax of the tour will be announcement of the 1970 Betty Crocker All- American Homemaker of Tomorrow. Selected from the 51 finalists on the basis of original Test scores and personal observation and interviews during the tour, she will be awarded an in- crease in her scholarship to $5,000. Second-, third- and fourth-ranking Home- makers of Tomorrow in the cont. next col. Baptist Church of Poplar April 19 - April 26. Rev. Harold Heiney of Havre, Montana will be the visit- ing evangelist. Rev. Heiney is the Pastor of the Imman- vel Baptist Church of Havre. He is also a missionary of the Home Mission Board of the Southern Baptist con- vention to the Indians. Rev. Heiney worked with the Indians of Oklahoma for yeors and will show some slides of his work there. Services will be held each night at 7:30 p.m. and the public is invited to attend. The regular times for Sunday Services will be at 11:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. accord- ing to the Pastor Rev. During its 16- year history, more than seven million young women have participated in the program and scholarship awards, with this year's grants, will total over $1,700, 000. A record 646, 041 senior girls in 15,040 of the country's high schools were enrolled in this year's search.
