I shall not pass this way again, May I be courteous to men, Faithful to friends, true to my God, A fragrance on the path I trod. —Clarence Urmy, in Harper's Bazaar. THE DOUBLE STANDARD / There came to our desk this week a letter for publication which we quote in part: \I wag' in Superior this week on one of the saddest missions that I have ever rendered. I took a woman of the underworld to the court room to be adjudged insane. The judgment was correct, but the history of hardships— and devotion to a husband was so pathetic—possibly caused her condition, along with exclusion from what she was used to, and her treatmi.nt by the Ladies' Aid. * * a\ , We do not care to quote further, and feel quite sure the writer did Trot iiitcrid-to -cast reliettion upon AnyTiffticuTaT7DiTin- ization, but used the term \Ladies' Aid\ in general, calling our attention to the apparent indifference of wonien to their so-called unfortunate sisters. And as we call to mind the tearstained face of this mere girl as she appeired in court, and as we listened to her disconnected mutterings, our hearts were touched with pity and regret—regret that some kind and motherly woman had not gone to her with words of hope and cheer before it was too late. Hope is a great tonic for the soul, administered by the hand of good intent. The little, kindly, every -day acts are, after all, what count. We must not judge too harshly in the game of life; we are all mere humans and should be treated as such, and to set aside a certain class to turn the spotlight of reform upon is un- just, to say the least, and will never eradicate existing evils. , We believe that when there ceases to be a double standard of morals for men and women this so-called \social problem\ will be solved. Sweep away this barrier of falsity and the majority of women will work out their own salvation without the aid of \purity conferences.\ All a woman needs in this world is a fair chance and some one who believes in her, preferedly one of the opposite sex, a home and kiddies, and life won't look so bad from any point of view.
