Mrs. Belmont, chairman of the women voters' convention in San Francisco, ad - WOMAN'S vised women to PARTY form no alliance with \any existing man's political party\- which was good advice -and then pro- ceeded with this dubious propo- sition: \The union of this sisterhood of women voters is the power, politically, of the near future. For twenty centuries you have been led to believe your work was to patch up the evils germin- ated by man's so-called civiliza- tion. It is time for us women to have a civilization of our own.\ Is it at all likely that a purely woman -made civilization would be any better than the present makeshift which is so contemptu- ously referred to as \man- made?\ Certainly, it would be superior in some important re- spects, where man's prejudice or ignorance or neglect has block- aded human progress. But when it comes to organizing one sex into a political party whose pro- gram is to re -make the world in disregard of the other sex's needs or wishes, not only every -sensible manThnt every -sensible woman must see the folly of it. Even if the thing could be done -and of course it can't -it would mean , disaster. No sex, not even jhe feminine.' can re-mpld the world and perfect human society. It takes both. These extreme feminists had better turn back to Tennyson, who was a wise man as well as a poet, and who made \The Prin- cess\ say, half a century before the feminist movement broke out: \Henceforth thou haat a helper, me, that know The woman's cause is man's; they rise or sink Together dwarfed or godlike, bond or free. Yet in the long years liker must they grow; The man be more of woman, she of man; He gain in sweetness and in moral height, Nor lose the wrestling thews that throw the world; She mental breadth, nor fail an child - ward care, Nor lose the childlike in the larger mind; Till at last she set herself to man Like noble music unto noble words. Then comes the statelier Eden back to men; Then springs the crowning race of humankind.\ If women are to have the fran- chise universally, let ifs have no men's parties and no women's parties, nor any petty bargaining by male and female factions, but such a noble co-operation as Ten- nyson portrays, in the big, com- plex task of bettering the world. —Wallace Press-Tifiles. The police were buzzing like bees. But before they could learn the cause out from the nearby building came Ramon Alfarez, accompanied by several policemen and a group of rail- road employees, among whom was Kirk Anthony. \There he is!\ wheezed the consul. clutching at his companion's arm. \Get him now before his friends.\ Williams thrust the policemen and the curious onlookers aside and, laying hold of Anthony, cried in triumph: \Well Mr. Jefferson Locke, I want you.\ 4r A little man in blue uniform was at- tempting to take the prisoner in charge. but the detective disregarded him.
