There is a strip of track thirty miles long on the Kansas Pacific railroad, without a curve, and no grade more than three feet to the mile. The gleam of a head -light is vis- ible fourteen miles away. The new directory of Chicago. just out, gives that city an increase of 76,000 in the population during the last year. Taking the ratio of 31 persons to each name in the directory, the total population is 532.000. The Pall Mall Gazette. noticing the de- ereaae of the importation of swine into England. says: `•It is only fair to give the the credit of this diminished import of swine to the Soriety for the Promotion ot Christianity among the Jews.\ A band of Crneaders. in San Francisco, while standing on the sidewalk. outside a saloon, broke through and tell a diatance of ten feet into the mud below. The child is perfectly white. while one of the claimant, is a full-blooded ne- gress, and yet the case has lasted for some time. Black flies, which trout anglers on the eastern rivers and lakes have a lively knowledge of. are quite abundant this year. To such an extent did they swarm on the Eastport and North American Railroml lately that they stopped a train of meson ait up s erade until the rails were scraped of the oily matter. It appears that recently her goods and chattels were seized for rent, and among them was a book in which she had pasted all the newspaper notices of her exploits. The lady valued this treasure at $500. and brought suit to recover it, but the judge did not value newspaper criticisms very highly and dis- missed the suit. The bidding on the stallion \Sam Purdy.\ at auction sale in San Francisco. was one of the most exciting affairs of the day. Ile was started at $10,000, which was rapidly raised to $16,000 by $1,000 bids, and then the bids were at $51)0 until he reached $10.- 000 when Mr. Hendrickson raised him up to $20.000. Three more bids at $500 each. knocked him down for $21,500. Dean Richmond, of the New York Cen- tral Railroad, wrote the most Illegible hand. and an owner or a small building sit- uated on land belonging to the road having received a scrawl from him which he could not decipher. supposed it to be a free pass over the road, and when, after waiting three months', Mr. Richmond asked the man why he didn't remove the building he found be had been using the document to which his signature was attached as a pass. and had been riding on the strength of it all summer. A Lexington (Ky.) paper relates that in that vicinity recently a party of thieves, wearing disguises. broke into the house of a widow lady and demanded that the lady should prepare them something - to eat. This was done, and the men ate heartily, but the lady had mixed poison with the food, and the next n.orning two of the thieves were found dead. One of them is said to be re- cognized as the lady's nephew. An Iowa doctor writes of the remarkable grasshoppers that do so much damage in that State: \In my opinion they come from the lower British Possessions. They are a very hardy insect. It takes quite a breeze to kill them. Immerse one in water for three hours, and he'll come to and have a better mastieative and digestive faculty than ever. They will devour arsenic with the avidity of a modern belle. When their wings are well developed they have a better locomotive power than the old W estern Stage Company ever had, and those that are here have at this date got a wing develop- ment now of about a quarter of an inch, while the body is about three-quarters of an inch in length.\ The New Bedford Mercury says: \ If there is an individual of an ambitious and at the same time retiring frame of mind. wanting a title. and yet weary of the bustle of' the great world, here is a fine opportu- nity to indulge his wishee.
